Having trouble listening to OlioRadio?
If you are having difficulties connecting to,or staying connected to,Live365's stations, check below. These are some of the most common problems listeners have had, along with some solutions.(Thanks to Bamman, DJ Magius, and many other Live365 broadcasters and listeners who've contributed this info.)
mp3 and mp3pro
Live365 uses two ways to encode their webcasts: mp3, and mp3pro. Both can be played on Any mp3 streaming player (see the list in the left-hand column). Webcasters using Live365's service can choose whether to use mp3 or mp3pro. MP3pro gives higher quality audio at lower speeds (32kps mp3pro sounds almost as good as 64kps mp3). However, on mp3-only players mp3pro audio sounds like the bass & low-end has been cut back & tends to sound "tinny". If you want to hear the differences between mp3 and mp3pro, try one of the Players under 'mp3 and mp3pro' at left for your operating system. (btw, OlioRadio streams at 56kps mp3, so anyone with a broadband connection can listen on any standard mp3 streaming software player)

Listening while running Firefox
1) Login to Live365 with Firefox and go to "My Live365" and click the "Listen Settings" tab. Under "MP3 Player" select the player you wish to use (Player365, Radio365, Real, WiMP, or MP3 Player(other)) then click "Save Settings". 2) Launch a Live365 station. a) If Firefox doesn't know what to do with a "PLS" file download, it will prompt you for an action. Select "Open With" and select your player in the dropdown. Also check the box labeled "Do this automatically for files like this". Click OK. b) If it tries to do anything else (like save the PLS file) do this: with Firefoxopen, click on Tools->Options->Downloads. Select the PLS file in the File Types list and click "Remove" and OK. Repeat #2a above.
Listening on Linux [Thanks! to DJ Magius]
First Make sure that your Live365 Preferences are set to MP3 Player - other (Log in to Live365,go to "My Live365" and click the "Listen Settings" tab. Under "MP3 Player" select mp3 player- Sonique,etc.). Next you need to download this file to /usr/bin/l365,or /usr/bin/l365vip if you're a VIP listener (ignore the dots beside the lines - they aren't part of the file you need):
- #!/bin/bash
- cat $1 > ~/play.pls
- xmms -p ~/play.pls
After this chmod the file to 755 so that you can call it from mozilla and it will execute. Finaly try to pull up the station and when you get the "Open with" Dialog enter /usr/bin/l365 (or /usr/bin/l365vip) into the middle option. At this point it should open XMMS with the station. You can check the box that says always do this next time and it will work(until Live365 screws with something). PLEASE NOTE: Your XMMS version must support MP3 playing. Fedora Core and Redhat Installations do not by default. You must uninstall the version that comes with those installs and install the proper RPM's. For listening with Streamtuner on Fedora Core 6, download http://www.bennewitz.com/rpms/endurs_repo-release-1.0.3.fc6.noarch.rpm or, if you run a Pentium III CPU, download http://www.bennewitz.com/rpms/endurs_repo-release-1.0.3.fc6.noarch.rpm. If you have Fedora Core 5, download Streamtuner at http://www.bennewitz.com/rpms/endurs_repo-release-1.0.2.fc5.noarch.rpm, or the P-III version at http://www.bennewitz.com/rpms/endurs_repo_i686-release-1.0.2.fc5.noarch.rpm.
Mobile Listening on Pocket PC devices
This is for PocketPC / PocketPC2002 / WM2003 / WM2003SE devices with WiFi enabled to listen while at/in (? lol) a WiFi Hotspot. The steps are:
- Download and install the GS Player on your Pocket PC (http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA032810/)
- On your laptop or desktop, make sure that the Player Preferences on your Live365 Listen Settings page (http://www.live365.com/cgi-bin/personalize.cgi) is set to 'MP3 Player-iTunes,MusicMatch,Winamp, or similar'
- In Winamp (or other players), start playing the Live365 station you want to hear
- Open the Playlist Editor and choose "Save Playlist" - This will create a M3U (.m3u) or a PLS (.pls) file on your laptop or desktop cpmputer
- Move this to your Pocket PC device
- Open this M3U or PLS file in GS Player at/in any good WiFi Hotspot. Presto! Live365 plays on your PPC!
Mobile Listening on Palm devices
If you have the latest version of Pocket Tunes software (availible here: http://www.pocket-tunes.com/) and the proper OS [PalmOS v.5.2 or later (or Tungsten T)], these are the devices supported-
PalmOne/Handspring Treo 600, Treo 650 - Zire 31, 71, 72 - Tungsten T, Tungsten T2, Tungsten T3, Tungsten T5, Tungsten C, Tungsten E - Garmin iQue 3600 - Sony CLIE UX40, UX50, TJ35, TJ37, TH55 - or Tapwave Zodiac device.
Here are the instructions (Thanks to Dave at Pocket Tunes!): To get the stations you want into Pocket Tunes you need to transfer an m3u file over to your card. Now don't be dismayed by the steps, it's not that complicated, just not as elegant as Shoutcast where you can just click and start. To get a Live365 m3u file you need to change your settings in the Listen Settings. Go to your 'My 365' page on your PC, then select the 'Listen Settings' tab. Change the MP3 player to 'MP3 Player'. Save your settings. What this will do is ask you to choose the player you want to play the stream on. You'll get the regular Live365 pop up, then it will open up whatever your default MP3 player is on your desktop. Most players, WinAmp or Windows Media Player for example, allow you to save the playlist as a M3U file which you can then transfer to your Palm and select in Pocket Tunes . So once the stream is going on your desktop player, go into File, then choose 'save as' or 'save current playlist as...' and save your playlist as an M3U file. You can then transfer it over to your card and when you open Pocket Tunes it will be listed in your playlist. Click on it and the stream will start up.
Listening through TiVo (thanks to w3z)
First you need a Tivo Series 2 hooked up (either wired or wireless) to your Home Network. Next you need to download iTunes. Go to the Listen page on the Live365 Website and choose 'Use Mp3 Player to Listen'. Go to the station's Live365 station page and click the 'Listen' link. This will download a Pls file to your computer. Use this to create an iTunes Playlist. Next go to tivo.com and download the Tivo Desktop Software. (availible for either PC or Mac). Follow the instructions to share your iTunes Playlists and then access your playlists from your Tivo.
Now you can listen to Live365 Stations in another room and hook it to your Stereo!
Listening on XBox/XBox 360 & Windows Media Center
Download and install the Live365 plugin for Windows Media Center & XBox/XBox360
Windows Media Player11 and .pls files
Houston, we have a problem. WiMP11 supports .pls files (the format Live365 & many other streaming audio sites use), but it doesn't give you a way to Play them! Live365 has notified Microsoft about this problem. Here are three possible workarounds:
- Download & install the apps from either http://wiki.cdyne.com/index.php/Playing_PLS_Winamp_files_in_Windows_Media, or http://tools.veloc-it.com/tabid/58/grm2id/7/Default.aspx. They are said to work for WiMP 9, 10, and 11. I've not heard if either one is a definitive fix so please email me (olioradio[at]gmail.com) with your results.
- Change players. A pain to be sure. There is a list of players for Windows systems in the left-hand column of this page. Winamp and Radio365 seem to be the best.
Listening with Windows Media Player10
donzacat posted this on the Live365 Message Boards:
- Open Windows Media Player. Go to the Media tab and choose to browse all online stores.
- Find Live365 and click. A pop-up will ask if you want to switch to it. Click okay. This will put the Live365 icon where your Media guide was.
- Click the Live365 icon and choose the Live365 menu item. This will bring up the Live365 website in Windows Media Player. Sign in (I told it to remember and it now automatically signs me in.) Pick your radio station. It will come up in the Windows Media player and start playing.
- Save it as a playlist and you can then just get there by choosing the playlist in your library. Takes just a few seconds to load.
- You can still use your visualizations if you don't want to look at the Live 365 window.
Station cuts out when using a wireless router
Listeners may experience 'stream drops' (station audio cutting in and out) after installing a wireless router. A tech at Belkin provided a fix (it works with Belkin routers - other brands may use different terminology or a different method). The fix is to use the DMZ feature in your router configuration to place your computer outside the router's NAT firewall (Of course, you should make sure you have at least a software firewall of some sort on your computer, or else you're opening yourself up to hacker attacks!) AShutting down the router's firewall doesn't do the trick. You need to use the DMZ feature.[contributed by pacificbill - thanks!]
Listening on a D-Link DSM-320 wireless media player
If the DSM-320 is slow to scroll through lists and balky when switching menus, there is a menu item that lets you quickly upgrade the device's firmware - built-in software that controls how the media player works. The latest firmware upgrade also enables use of Live365.
(thx troyandjessica) To log into Live365 on your DSM-520, from the main DSM-520 menu, pick the following options (assuming the latest firmware of June 2007): - Online Zone - Direct Access Content - Live365 - Setup - Login
VIP Listening on the Philips SLA5520
(thx JT) Make sure your Live365 account info is set up correctly at my.philips.com. Go to my.philips.com, then Account/Select Music Services and make sure the Live365 checkbox is marked. Then go to Enter Account Information and make sure your PM user name and password are entered correctly.
Player365 won't open
Live365 uses JavaScript (a programming language) to operate some functions on their site. If you have JavaScript support turned off in your browser (check IE by clicking Tools> Internet Options> Security - Mozilla or Firefox, click Tools> Options> Web Features),some parts of the site won't work. Some Pop-Up Blockers (Google and other Toolbars,AdSubtract, etc.) can also disable Player365. For this, you have to "Allow" Live365 pop-ups in order to run Player365 (Note:This doesn't cause a problem with Radio365.)
Also, you may need to clear your Browsers "cache" (IE: Tools> Internet Options> Temporary Internet Files, click "Delete Files"; Mozille/Firefox: Tools> Options> Privacy> Cache, click "Clear"). If you still have problems and your ISP uses "Cacheing" (AOL and other 'Optimized', "Web Accelerator" or 'Fast Access' dial-up deals from NetZero,Juno, and other companies),then you'll have to wait for them to clear their "cache" (usually every few days) or contact your ISP's Support.
Changed players
If you change your player (say, choose Player365 & later start using another player),the first time you return to Live's site you'll be taken back to the Listening box to choose again.
